Understanding solar power has never been as critical as it is now in a world finding it difficult to continue using fossil fuels. Solar panels are constructed of silicon which conducts electricity. Light particles hit the silicon and electrons are knocked off their molecular framework creating a magnetic pull. A current is thus created and collected for later use in batteries or put back on an electrical grid.
Most states, including New Jersey and Pennsylvania, now offer initiatives to entice homeowners to install solar energy applications. New Jersey has some of the best rebate incentives and has a sunny climate that is ideal for solar panels.
So What Are the Incentives?
The Renewable Portfolio Standard now requires that 22.5% of public utility power must come from renewables by 2021. New Jersey happens to be one of the fastest growing markets for solar installation in the United States, second only to California, in terms of installations. What does this mean? More incentives for you!
Solar Renewable Energy Certificate Program (New Jersey)
How do SREC's work? Each time a solar system generates 1,000 kWh of electricity an SREC is earned. Solar project owners report the energy production to a maintained tracking system, and a credit is placed into that customers electric account.
Tax Incentives (New Jersey)
All solar equipment is tax exempt. All solar equipment is also exempt from property taxes and 100% of the added home value created by the solar system is exempt.
Renewable Energy Incentive Program (REIP)
For standard residential systems the current payout rate is $1.55/watt. Any system installed as part of new construction is eligible for a $1.00/watt payout if it is built within a designated New Jersey smart growth area.
Net Metering Laws
Net metering laws allow all solar energy producers to be credited for net excess generation (NEG) at their utilities retail rate. NEG is whatever energy a solar system produces beyond what the home requires. This energy is fed back to the grid and then used elsewhere.
